Catholics were treated badly under Queen Elizabeth I. There were small plots to kill King James I. Guy Fawkes, Robert Catesby and other men found a room under Parliament. Guy Fawkes organised the gunpowder in barrels. Lord Monteagle received a warning letter. Guy Fawkes was caught and put in prison. Parliament declared 5 November a public celebration.
